The old episcopal town of Brixen lies in a wide valley basin. The landscape is characterised by beautiful orchards and vineyards. The mild climate of the Eisack Valley, which has its origins in the mountains nearby, is striking. Brixen offers a breathtaking panoramic view – not only of the surroundings, but also of the many eras that this jewel has experienced. The townscape consists of both modern and historical elements. Winding alleyways and buildings steeped in history create a special charm, while the surrounding nature and the local Plose mountain invite you to take part in all kinds of sporting activities. You can reach the medieval town centre by bike in around 15 minutes via the cycle path that runs past Campan Castle.

Culture and History

The gem called Brixen

The versatile, charming small town with its colonnades and the enchanting ‘Stufels’ district has something to offer whatever the weather: immerse yourself in the thousand-year-old history of the town, either on your own or on a guided tour, including evening tours with a night watchman. There are cultural experiences all year round: the ‘Summer Emotions’ in the warmer months, culinary delights at the bread and strudel market in autumn, the Christmas market and the Acquarena pool and sauna world in winter. Campan Castle is ideal as accommodation during a music week at the Vinzentinum or a congress.

A castle, a monastery, a fort

At the gates of the episcopal city

Neustift Monastery is also open to you free of charge thanks to the BrixenCard. From here, many hiking trails lead out into the marvellous landscape amidst apple orchards and vineyards, allowing you to explore the Eisack Valley region. Rodenegg Castle and Franzensfeste Fortress are also well worth a visit. The former is one of the largest fortified castles in South Tyrol, while the latter is one of the most interesting fortresses in the entire Alpine region. Time and again, the large complex is the venue for contemporary art exhibitions.

Good food and fine wines

Cuisine and restaurants

If you want to take a break and enjoy a meal out instead of cooking in your apartment: There are numerous options for lunch and dinner in the old town of Brixen and the surrounding area, including many family-run establishments that have mastered the art of cooking and are adept at producing Mediterranean delicacies in addition to traditional South Tyrolean dishes and innovative cuisine - the latter, by the way, has been recognised by UNESCO, just like the Dolomites, and is part of the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity because it is so diverse and offers so many healthy benefits. Good wine frames the gourmet experience for which both South Tyrol and the Eisack Valley are renowned.
